In November 2017 there was a very active conversation regarding bringing wired internet service to Raymond, Wisconsin on the nextdoor.com platform. This is not a new topic of discussion among residents, the newspaper, or even internally to e-vergent. We have a significant customer base in Raymond using our fixed wireless internet service but we cannot connect everyone to it. Especially weak in our coverage area is the NE area of Raymond due to elevation changes and tree cover. Over the last five years, we have had internal discussions about when and where our first fiber to the home project would be. We have looked at a number of different areas but thus far have yet to actually move forward with any of them due to the extremely high cost of running wires in a low-density environment.
All that might be changing though. The eligibility criteria for a State of Wisconsin grant program is changing for 2018 which could help make a first phase deployment possible. The proposed phase 1 of our deployment is the route highlighted in pink below, click to zoom.
This may look like a small project, but it’s no small undertaking in time, money, and what it means for future expansion projects. We need a starting point where we can connect to our existing network. We cannot easily get to areas North and North West of here to connect to our existing network. So, we see this as a place to start and expand North, South, and West in an orderly and planned manner from the underground plant engineering perspective. We would like to see phase 1 get built and move on to additional phases in future years.
An important part of this first step is hearing from you, especially people in the phase 1 area. We need a high level of participation for this to happen – ideally greater than 75% of homes passed will subscribe to service. It is also vital from the grant standpoint to be able to provide letters of support of the project. e-vergent will be funding the majority of this project but the grant plays a huge role in making this a reality. The grant needs to be filed by January 25th 2018 so we do not have a lot of time.
With your support, as well as the state of Wisconsin, we are ready to do this!
